What is the DiskUsage utility in Windows 10 and how to use it.
Microsoft has added a new tool, DiskUsage (diskusage.exe), to Windows 10. This is a console-based application that allows you to perform various scans to view advanced details about your computer’s storage devices.
If you run out of space or want to find the largest file or folder on your hard drive, you know that Windows offers nothing useful for disk analysis. Things have changed.
Windows 10 Disk User Tools
The new DiskUsage application is located in the C:WindowsSystem32 folder and can therefore be accessed from any command prompt or any open PowerShell window. This tool was first available in Windows 10 version 21277 and also in the Insider Preview version, which is known to have many hidden features and options, including animations of new windows.
The application summarizes the recursive disk usage for a particular directory. That’s how it works.
To use the DiskUsage program in Windows 10
- Open a new command line as administrator.
- Type diskusage /minFileSize=2147483648 /h c:windows. Folders larger than 2 GB in the Windows folder appear here.
- Type diskusage / ? and press Enter. You will then receive a full link to the supported options.
You’re done.
Pay attention: The /h option displays the size values in a human readable format, rounded to gigabytes, megabytes, etc. The /h option displays the size values in a human readable format, rounded to gigabytes, megabytes, etc.
Pay attention: If you run DiskUsage without settings, it provides information about the files in the current folder. By default, the command prompt opens in the C:WindowsSystem32 folder, so that the application manages the files and folders stored in the system32 directory and also shows some details about the space they use.
Here are the support options of DiskUsage.

The application supports configuration files that define default command line arguments. The user can change the format of the output and apply filters to file names.
The tool is currently under development. It’s incomplete, so some variants don’t do what they’re supposed to. To see this in action, you need to install Windows 10 build 21277 (via MSFTNEXT).
