IPS technology is not entirely new, but it has gained popularity with consumers with the introduction of touch devices, and most importantly – the top of the iPad, which was already equipped with an IPS screen in 2011. However, IPS monitors have been used in the past by professional photographers, artists and graphic designers, but they were expensive.

Benefits of IPS display technology:

In terms of image quality, IPS displays offer excellent colour reproduction and wider viewing angles than cheaper TN panels. For example, even high-quality TN panels can only display 6 bits per RGB colour, while IPS panels have a greater bit depth, which means greater colour accuracy. This explains why IPS monitors have always been preferred by graphic designers and professionals who do critical color work. IPS monitors are also capable of supporting professional color space technologies such as Adobe RGB.

For consumers, IPS displays have another advantage, namely their wide viewing angles. If your screen is equipped with a TN panel and you look at it from the centre, you will notice that the colours become increasingly blurred, especially darker shades. This is bad news if your work depends on colour accuracy, as TN panels are not very good at colour reproduction. IPS panels also tend to change colour when viewed from different angles, but this is very minimal, and to notice this you need to look at the screen from a truly extreme angle.

So, if your laptop is usually equipped with an IPS screen, it means you get the best picture quality. Most laptops equipped with an IPS display have a matte finish, which is very useful for reducing glare when a laptop is used outdoors or in a room with a direct light source. However, some users prefer a glossy surface because it makes the colours of an IPS panel even sharper.

However, not all IPS panels are the same and some of them have to take into account certain problems, such as more visible motion blur or ghosts due to slower reaction times. For players, the best option is a high quality TN panel because it has a minimal response time.
